Paklava

  • Prep Time: 60 min

  • Bake Time: 45 min

  • Yield: 10 servings

Ingredients:

Paklava-

  • 1 package Phyllo Dough

  • 1 lb. chopped walnuts

  • 4 cups butter

Syrup-

  • 2 cups sugar

  • 1 ½ cups water

  • 1 tsp. lemon juice

Instructions:

Remove Phyllo dough from the package and place on a moist hand towel. Melt butter on stovetop. Grab 5 layers of the dough from the pile, then cover dough with moist towel. Brush baking pan lightly with melted butter and place 5 layers of dough at the bottom. Brush the top of the dough with butter. Add next stack of dough, brush with butter, then sprinkle with chopped walnuts. Continue buttering every fifth layer and sprinkling nuts on every tenth layer for about 50 layers. Cut dough diagonally (about 2 inches apart) to make diamond-shaped pieces. Pour melted butter over each piece, then bake in 350-degree oven for 15 minutes. Heat remaining butter on stovetop on high heat for about 5 minutes, until sizzling. Take pan out of the oven and pour hot butter on each diamond, making a sizzling sound. Bake in the 350-degree oven for 30 minutes. After removing pan from oven, drain excess butter. Remove one piece from the corner of the pan and leave pan in a tilted position for 15 minutes. Melt sugar, water, and lemon juice in a small pan on stovetop until a thick syrup forms. Drain the excess butter again, place the removed piece back in pan and add lukewarm syrup to the paklava.
